Curtain Width Calculator

Enter your rod or window width, choose a fullness level and panel count, and the calculator returns the total curtain fabric width you need and the width per panel — plus how that compares with common ready-made panel sizes.

Rod width usually gives the more useful result, because curtains stack past the glass.

Applies to center-closing pairs only.

How this tool works

The width to cover is your rod or window width plus stack-back allowance on each side, plus any center overlap. That coverage width is multiplied by the fullness factor to get the total flat fabric width, which is then divided by the number of panels.

Example: A 72 inch rod with standard 2× fullness and two panels needs about 144 inches of total fabric width, or roughly 72 inches of fabric per panel.

Assumptions used

  • Fullness multiplies the width the curtains must cover, not the window width alone.
  • Stack-back allowance is added to each side so open curtains clear the glass.
  • Overlap is added once for center-closing panel pairs.
  • Panel widths are rounded up to the nearest inch for practical shopping.

Practical tips

  • Measure the rod, not the window, whenever the rod is already installed or planned.
  • Sheers often look best at 2.5× to 3× fullness; heavy drapes read full at 2×.
  • Ready-made panels state the flat fabric width, not the finished pleated width.
  • If you are between sizes, size up — thin curtains are the most common regret.
