TV Viewing Distance Calculator
Reviewed by Maria BanouHome Life AdvisorRoom and Furniture Planning
Use this calculator to explore a comfortable viewing-distance range for your television. It considers screen size, resolution, and personal viewing preference, and can compare your current seating distance to the recommended range for the room you're planning.
How this tool works
The calculator multiplies your TV's diagonal screen size by common viewing-distance factors that vary by resolution and preference. It returns a minimum, balanced, and maximum comfortable distance, then compares your current seating to that range.
Example: A 65-inch 4K television at a balanced preference gives a comfortable range of roughly 5.4 to 10.8 feet, with about 7.5 feet as a balanced middle.
Assumptions used
- Distances are expressed in feet and represent a comfortable range, not a single required number.
- Multipliers are common guidance based on screen size and resolution — actual comfort depends on eyesight, room lighting, screen quality, and personal preference.
- The tool assumes a standard flat-panel television viewed from a seated position at roughly eye level.
Practical tips
- Sit in the actual seating position with a tape measure before finalizing a wall-mount location.
- If two people watch from very different distances, plan seating around the closer viewer for comfort.
- Larger screens with 4K resolution generally allow closer, more immersive viewing without image softness.
- Leave room for a soundbar, media console, and ventilation around the television.
