How high should a curtain rod be placed?

A common guideline is 4 to 6 inches above the window trim, or closer to the ceiling when you want the room to feel taller. If there is little space above the trim, mount as high as the space safely allows.

How far should the rod extend beyond the window?

Between 3 and 10 inches on each side. More extension lets the curtains stack off the glass and makes the window read wider, but only if the wall space allows it.

Should curtains touch the floor?

Floor length that finishes just above the floor is the most practical. A slight break or a puddle looks softer but collects dust and can be a trip risk in walkways.

What if there is very little wall space above the window?

Mount as high as the trim allows, extend the rod wider on the sides instead, and choose a slim bracket. Widening compensates visually when you cannot go higher.

Can one rod placement work for every room?

No. Ceiling height, window size, crown molding, vents, and furniture all change what looks balanced, so treat the suggestion as a starting point and check it in the room.

How this tool works

The preferred rod height and side extension for your chosen visual effect are reduced to fit the wall and ceiling space you entered. The rod height above the floor is then used to derive sill, apron, floor, break, and puddle curtain lengths.

Example: A 36 in wide, 60 in tall window with 14 in above the trim and 8 in of wall on each side, using the taller-window effect, gives a rod about 12 in above the trim, 7 in of extension per side, a 50 in rod, and floor-length curtains around 96 in.

Assumptions used

The rod is never placed higher than the space you entered between the window trim and the ceiling, minus about 1.5 inches for the bracket.
Side extensions are capped by the wall space you entered on each side, minus 1 inch of clearance.
Floor-length curtains are calculated to finish about half an inch above the floor.
