Room Planning Basics
Sizes, spacing, and layout rules that make any room feel right.
Measure First, Buy Second
- Measure your room dimensions including windows and door swings
- Use painter's tape on the floor to outline furniture before buying
- Account for outlets, vents, and light switch access
- Measure doorways and hallways — furniture needs to fit through
- Don't forget ceiling height for tall bookcases and floor lamps
Traffic Flow Rules
- Main pathways need at least 36" of clearance
- Minor pathways (between furniture) need at least 24"
- Don't block natural paths from door to door
- In living rooms, create a clear path around the seating area
Living Room Layout
- Sofa should face the focal point (TV, fireplace, window)
- Coffee table: 14-18" from the sofa edge
- Side tables should be within arm's reach of seating
- Area rug should be large enough for front legs of all furniture
- Consider conversation distance: 8-10 feet across seating
Dining Room Layout
- Allow 24" of table width per person
- Chairs need 36" of clearance behind them to push back
- Table size guide: 48" round seats 4, 60" round seats 6
- Rectangular tables: 72" seats 6, 96" seats 8
- Chandelier should hang 30-36" above the table surface
Bedroom Layout
- Leave at least 24" on each side of the bed for getting in and out
- Nightstands should be within arm's reach and at mattress height
- Dresser needs 36" in front for drawer clearance
- King beds need rooms at least 12x12 feet
- Queen beds work in rooms 10x10 feet and larger
