SW Cleaning Code
Water or solvent — the most flexible code, but the stain still decides which one you reach for.
This guide is intended for educational purposes only. Every home, product, and situation is different. Always follow manufacturer instructions and consult qualified professionals when appropriate.
SW (also printed WS) means either water-based or solvent cleaners are acceptable. The stain, not the tag, decides which one you reach for.
Consistent, material-appropriate care is the single biggest factor in how long furniture and mattresses stay comfortable and beautiful. In Florida, humidity, salt air, and UV compound quickly — a small monthly routine prevents years of avoidable wear.
- Water used on an oil stain, spreading the ring
- Solvent applied over a still-damp water treatment, setting residue
- Crushed pile from scrubbing
- Color looks flat, patchy, or dusty even after a quick wipe
- New creaks, wobbles, or loose fasteners
- A faint musty smell after closed-up periods
- Fabric or leather feels stiff, tacky, or unusually dry
- Keep the room between 68–76 °F with humidity around 45–55%.
- Rotate cushions, pillows, and accessories on a set weekly cadence.
- Block direct afternoon sun with shades, sheers, or UV film.
- Address spills and marks within the first 60 seconds — always blot, never rub.
- 1Identify the spill: water-soluble (coffee, wine, juice) or oil-based (grease, makeup, sunscreen).
- 2Blot dry first — remove everything that will lift without a product.
- 3Apply the matching cleaner to a white cloth, never to the fabric.
- 4Work outside in, then rinse water-based treatments with distilled water.
- 5Dry fully with airflow before deciding whether a second pass is needed.
Match the cleaner to the spill
Water-based cleaner for coffee, juice, wine, and pet accidents. Solvent for oil, grease, makeup, ink, and sunscreen. Using water on an oil stain spreads the ring wider than the original spill.
Never mix the two
Solvent applied over a still-damp water treatment can set the residue permanently. Let the area fully dry before switching methods.
Start mild, escalate slowly
Distilled water first, then mild soap foam, then the appropriate specialty cleaner. Most stains surrender at step one if you get to them quickly.
SW does not mean scrub-safe
Chenille, boucle, and velvet-face SW fabrics still crush and pill under pressure. Blot, then feather the pile back with a soft brush once dry.
- Dust and quick visual inspection
- Wipe high-contact surfaces with a dry microfiber
- Vacuum thoroughly including under and behind
- Check for loose hardware or joints
- Deep clean using material-appropriate cleaner
- Rotate cushions or accessories to even wear
- Professional deep clean or conditioning if applicable
- Full inspection, tighten fasteners, refresh protection
- Humidity spikes after storms — run dehumidifiers or A/C to hold indoor RH under 55%.
- Salt air within a mile of the coast accelerates corrosion and finish wear; wipe metal and hardware weekly.
- Snowbird and closed-up months are the highest-risk period; leave A/C on 78 °F and cover pieces exposed to direct light.
Read the cleaning code first
Under every cushion is a tag: W = water-based cleaner, S = solvent only, WS = either, X = vacuum only. Using the wrong one can water-ring fabric or dissolve backing. If the tag is missing, test in a hidden area or call a professional.
Blot, never rub
Press a clean white cloth straight down, lift, move to a dry area of the cloth, and repeat from the outside of the spill inward. Rubbing breaks fiber ends and drives the stain deeper.
Well-cared-for pieces typically deliver 8–15 years of everyday performance. Investment-grade construction with a consistent routine routinely reaches 20+ years.
- Structural frame is sound and joints are tight
- Finish or upholstery damage is localized (one cushion, one panel)
- You still love the shape, scale, and function of the piece
- Frame flex, broken joinery, or repeated hardware failure
- Widespread finish, foam, or spring breakdown
- The piece no longer fits your life stage, room, or comfort needs
