Consistent, material-appropriate care is the single biggest factor in how long furniture and mattresses stay comfortable and beautiful. In Florida, humidity, salt air, and UV compound quickly — a small monthly routine prevents years of avoidable wear.
- Cellulosic browning — a tan halo that appears as the fiber dries
- Shrinkage from warm water
- Musty odor from ambient humidity with no spill involved
- Color looks flat, patchy, or dusty even after a quick wipe
- New creaks, wobbles, or loose fasteners

- Keep the room between 68–76 °F with humidity around 45–55%.
- Rotate cushions, pillows, and accessories on a set weekly cadence.
- Block direct afternoon sun with shades, sheers, or UV film.
- Address spills and marks within the first 60 seconds — always blot, never rub.

- 2Test cold distilled water on a hidden area and wait a full day.

- 4Feather the damp edge outward so there is no hard drying line.
- 5Dry immediately with a fan — speed is what prevents browning.
Cold water only
Warm water shrinks and distorts natural fibers, and the shrinkage does not come back. Everything on an O-code piece is done cold.
Natural fiber browns from the inside
Jute, sisal, and heavy linens wick moisture and cellulose to the surface as they dry, leaving a tan halo. Fast drying with a fan is what prevents it.
Florida humidity is the real enemy
Natural fibers hold moisture from the air, so an O-code piece in a lanai-adjacent room can develop musty odor without any spill at all. Hold indoor humidity at 45–55%.
Vacuum before it looks dirty
Natural weaves trap sand and pollen deep in the fiber. Weekly vacuuming does more for appearance and lifespan than any cleaning product.

- Wipe high-contact surfaces with a dry microfiber
- Vacuum thoroughly including under and behind
- Check for loose hardware or joints
- Deep clean using material-appropriate cleaner
- Rotate cushions or accessories to even wear
- Professional deep clean or conditioning if applicable
- Full inspection, tighten fasteners, refresh protection
- O-code pieces in lanai-adjacent rooms need a dehumidifier more than they need a cleaner.
Florida humidity baseline
Keep indoor relative humidity in the 40–55% range year-round. Above 60% invites mildew, warping, and musty odors; below 30% dries wood and loosens joints. A smart thermostat with humidity control or a stand-alone dehumidifier makes this effortless.
Read the cleaning code first
