Consistent, material-appropriate care is the single biggest factor in how long furniture and mattresses stay comfortable and beautiful. In Florida, humidity, salt air, and UV compound quickly — a small monthly routine prevents years of avoidable wear.
- Cold wash, low or no dry
- Wash all pieces together
- Zippers before the drum
- Never bleach a colored slipcover
- Color looks flat, patchy, or dusty even after a quick wipe
- New creaks, wobbles, or loose fasteners
- A faint musty smell after closed-up periods
- Fabric or leather feels stiff, tacky, or unusually dry
- Keep the room between 68–76 °F with humidity around 45–55%.
- Rotate cushions, pillows, and accessories on a set weekly cadence.
- Block direct afternoon sun with shades, sheers, or UV film.
- Address spills and marks within the first 60 seconds — always blot, never rub.
- 1Vacuum or dust with a soft brush attachment to remove grit first.
- 2Spot-test any cleaner on a hidden area and wait 10 minutes.
- 3Work in small sections with a barely-damp microfiber, blotting outward.
- 4Rinse residue with a clean damp cloth, then dry with a fresh microfiber.
- 5Allow to fully air-dry away from direct sun before use.
Cold wash, low or no dry
Most slipcover shrinkage happens in the dryer, not the washer. Wash cold on gentle, then put the cover back on the frame slightly damp so it dries to shape.
Wash all pieces together
Cushion covers, arm covers, and the body cover fade at slightly different rates if laundered separately. Do the whole set at once, even when only one piece looks soiled.
Zippers before the drum
Close every zipper and hook so teeth do not catch and tear the fabric. Turning covers inside out protects the face of the weave.
Never bleach a colored slipcover
Bleach weakens the fiber even when the color survives, and the failure shows up months later as thinning at the seat front. Use an oxygen brightener instead.
- Dust and quick visual inspection
- Wipe high-contact surfaces with a dry microfiber
- Vacuum thoroughly including under and behind
- Check for loose hardware or joints
- Deep clean using material-appropriate cleaner
- Rotate cushions or accessories to even wear
- Professional deep clean or conditioning if applicable
- Full inspection, tighten fasteners, refresh protection
- Humidity spikes after storms — run dehumidifiers or A/C to hold indoor RH under 55%.
- Salt air within a mile of the coast accelerates corrosion and finish wear; wipe metal and hardware weekly.
- Snowbird and closed-up months are the highest-risk period; leave A/C on 78 °F and cover pieces exposed to direct light.
Read the cleaning code first
Under every cushion is a tag: W = water-based cleaner, S = solvent only, WS = either, X = vacuum only. Using the wrong one can water-ring fabric or dissolve backing. If the tag is missing, test in a hidden area or call a professional.
