W Cleaning Code
Water-based cleaners only — the most forgiving code, and still the easiest one to over-wet.

W means water-based cleaning agents are safe on the cover. It is the most common code on family furniture and the most forgiving — as long as you control how much moisture goes in.
Consistent, material-appropriate care is the single biggest factor in how long furniture and mattresses stay comfortable and beautiful. In Florida, humidity, salt air, and UV compound quickly — a small monthly routine prevents years of avoidable wear.
- Water rings from hard tap water
- Gray re-soiling within weeks from leftover soap
- Mildew in a down or feather-wrap cushion after over-wetting
- Color looks flat, patchy, or dusty even after a quick wipe
- New creaks, wobbles, or loose fasteners
- A faint musty smell after closed-up periods
- Fabric or leather feels stiff, tacky, or unusually dry
- Keep the room between 68–76 °F with humidity around 45–55%.
- Rotate cushions, pillows, and accessories on a set weekly cadence.
- Block direct afternoon sun with shades, sheers, or UV film.
- Address spills and marks within the first 60 seconds — always blot, never rub.
- 1Vacuum the whole panel with a brush head first.
- 2Whip a few drops of clear dish soap into a cup of distilled water and skim only the foam.
- 3Work a small section at a time, blotting from the outside of the spot inward.
- 4Rinse with a distilled-water cloth to lift soap residue.
- 5Dry with a fan across the surface before replacing the cushion.
Use the least water that works
Mix a few drops of clear dish soap into a cup of distilled water, whip it to foam, and apply only the foam with a cloth. Foam cleans the fiber surface without saturating the cushion beneath it.
Rinse or you will re-soil
Soap residue is sticky and attracts dirt within weeks, which is why a 'clean' cushion looks gray again by next month. Follow every cleaning pass with a distilled-water cloth to lift the residue out.
Tap water leaves rings
Florida tap water is hard. Minerals dry into a visible halo at the edge of the damp area. Distilled water costs a dollar a gallon and eliminates the problem entirely.
Dry with airflow, not heat
A box fan aimed across the cushion dries it in an hour or two. Hair dryers and sunlight set stains and can shrink or shine the fibers.
- Dust and quick visual inspection
- Wipe high-contact surfaces with a dry microfiber
- Vacuum thoroughly including under and behind
- Check for loose hardware or joints
- Deep clean using material-appropriate cleaner
- Rotate cushions or accessories to even wear
- Professional deep clean or conditioning if applicable
- Full inspection, tighten fasteners, refresh protection
- Humidity spikes after storms — run dehumidifiers or A/C to hold indoor RH under 55%.
- Salt air within a mile of the coast accelerates corrosion and finish wear; wipe metal and hardware weekly.
- Snowbird and closed-up months are the highest-risk period; leave A/C on 78 °F and cover pieces exposed to direct light.
Read the cleaning code first
Under every cushion is a tag: W = water-based cleaner, S = solvent only, WS = either, X = vacuum only. Using the wrong one can water-ring fabric or dissolve backing. If the tag is missing, test in a hidden area or call a professional.
Blot, never rub
Press a clean white cloth straight down, lift, move to a dry area of the cloth, and repeat from the outside of the spill inward. Rubbing breaks fiber ends and drives the stain deeper.

- Structural frame is sound and joints are tight
- Finish or upholstery damage is localized (one cushion, one panel)
- You still love the shape, scale, and function of the piece
- Frame flex, broken joinery, or repeated hardware failure
- Widespread finish, foam, or spring breakdown
- The piece no longer fits your life stage, room, or comfort needs
