Consistent, material-appropriate care is the single biggest factor in how long furniture and mattresses stay comfortable and beautiful. In Florida, humidity, salt air, and UV compound quickly — a small monthly routine prevents years of avoidable wear.

- Address spills and marks within the first 60 seconds — always blot, never rub.

- 2Spot-test any cleaner on a hidden area and wait 10 minutes.
- 3Work in small sections with a barely-damp microfiber, blotting outward.
- 4Rinse residue with a clean damp cloth, then dry with a fresh microfiber.
- 5Allow to fully air-dry away from direct sun before use.
Fiber decides everything
Polyester and performance velvets are cleanable and forgiving. Cotton velvet crushes and marks. Silk and viscose velvet are professional-only. Read the content label before you follow any advice about 'velvet.'
Pressure marks are normal
Shading and crush marks where people sit are a characteristic of pile fabrics, not damage. A soft brush stroked in the nap direction, sometimes with light steam held above the fabric on synthetics, lifts most of it.
Weekly care
Vacuum with a brush head in the nap direction and brush with a soft garment brush. Weekly brushing is what keeps the pile standing and the color reading evenly across a room.
Cleaning method
On W-coded synthetic velvet, blot with mild soap solution and dry-brush the nap while damp. On S-coded and natural-fiber velvets, blot only and hire a cleaner.
Products to avoid
Never rub, never use a stiff brush, never apply a wet cloth to cotton or viscose velvet, and never let a spill dry into the pile base — it stiffens and shows forever.
Florida considerations
Humidity keeps pile fabrics slightly limp, which shows crush marks more. Performance velvet with a solution-dyed synthetic fiber handles Florida homes best and is now widely available.

- Check for loose hardware or joints
- Deep clean using material-appropriate cleaner
- Rotate cushions or accessories to even wear

- Full inspection, tighten fasteners, refresh protection
- Humidity spikes after storms — run dehumidifiers or A/C to hold indoor RH under 55%.
- Salt air within a mile of the coast accelerates corrosion and finish wear; wipe metal and hardware weekly.
- Snowbird and closed-up months are the highest-risk period; leave A/C on 78 °F and cover pieces exposed to direct light.
Well-cared-for pieces typically deliver 8–15 years of everyday performance. Investment-grade construction with a consistent routine routinely reaches 20+ years.
