Characteristics
Rayon is regenerated cellulose. It drapes beautifully and takes dye with a luminous depth, which is why it appears in decorative and accent fabrics rather than heavy-duty seating.
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages: sheen, softness, and rich color. Disadvantages: it loses up to half its strength when wet, water-spots readily, shrinks, and wrinkles. Blends fix most of this; pure rayon does not.
Cleaning method
Treat rayon as an S-code fabric unless the tag says otherwise. Blot only, avoid water, and route real cleaning to a professional. A DIY water clean on rayon is how a small mark becomes a permanent ring.
Products to avoid
Water, steam, bleach, and any high-alkaline cleaner. Even a well-meaning damp cloth can distort the weave.
Florida considerations
Rayon absorbs ambient humidity, which softens the fiber and encourages mildew in closed-up seasonal homes. It is a poor choice for lanai-adjacent rooms and second homes that sit vacant.
