How this tool works
The planner estimates the sleeping surface footprint from the arrangement you choose or the dimensions you enter, compares what the room has left with common bedside and foot-of-bed comfort ranges, and then scores sleeping space, guest comfort, storage and convenience, and multipurpose flexibility from your answers. The lowest-scoring, highest-impact findings — adjusted for your primary concern, how often guests visit, and how long they stay — become a ranked list of first steps.
Example: An 11 by 12 ft spare bedroom with a queen bed, both sides accessible, a nightstand and lamp on one side, part of a closet free, and no planned luggage spot usually scores well on space and comfort, with luggage placement the first thing worth solving.
Assumptions used
- Sleeping-surface sizes are estimated from the arrangement you select when exact dimensions are unknown, since actual beds vary by manufacturer.
- Clearance guidance uses the same everyday comfort ranges already used elsewhere in the toolkit: roughly 30 in beside a bed where possible, about 24 in as a workable minimum, and roughly 30 in at the foot of the bed for a comfortable walking route.
- The planner assumes the bed sits against one wall with its length running along the longer side of the room, which is how most guest rooms are arranged.
- Scores describe how prepared the room is likely to feel for a guest. They are not a measurement of your furniture, and they are not a medical, accessibility, electrical, or HVAC assessment.
Practical tips
- Walk the room in the dark once before guests arrive. It shows immediately whether the path from the bed to the door is dependable.
- One clear surface beside the bed with a light and a charging point solves more guest complaints than any decorative purchase.
- A suitcase needs a home. A luggage rack, a bench, or one cleared corner keeps the bed and floor from becoming the drop zone.
- For stays longer than a weekend, clearing even a quarter of the closet changes how settled a guest feels.
- When the room also works as an office or craft room, closed storage lets the room change use in minutes rather than an afternoon.
