What should older homeowners look for in a mattress?
Reviewed & curated by Maria BanouHome Life AdvisorMattress guidance
Bed height, edge support and positional adjustment matter more than firmness alone.
Key points
- • 24–26 inches from floor to mattress top
- • Edge support is a fall-risk issue, not a comfort preference
- • Medium contouring over firm support
- • Avoid deep-sink builds that make repositioning hard
Bed height is the safety decision
Sitting on the edge with feet flat and knees near ninety degrees is the safest transfer position. Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress with a person sitting on it — foundation height plus mattress height, compressed.
Why edge support matters more with age
Almost everyone sits on the edge to get in and out of bed. A perimeter that collapses turns that routine into a fall risk, and it also shrinks the usable sleeping surface on a shared queen.
Adjustable bases
Elevating the head six to eight degrees eases reflux and positional snoring, and raising the legs helps circulation. For someone who struggles to sit up, an adjustable base can be the difference between independence and needing help.
Common questions
Compare your options
Adjustable Base vs Traditional Frame
An adjustable base changes how you sleep; a traditional frame changes how the room looks. Both are valid — they solve different problems.
CompareBox Spring vs Platform Bed
Modern foam and hybrid mattresses need a rigid, evenly supported surface — which is exactly what a true box spring does not provide.
