What size mattress fits my bedroom?

Dimensions, clearances and the measurement that people forget.

Key points

  • Queen 60 × 80, King 76 × 80, Cal King 72 × 84 inches
  • 24–30 inches of clearance per walked side
  • A frame adds 2 to 5 inches beyond the mattress
  • Measure the hallway and stair turns before ordering
Walking clearance
The floor space between the bed frame and the nearest wall or furniture on each side you use to walk.

Standard dimensions

Every size in inches, so you can tape them out on the floor before committing.

  • Twin 38 × 75 · Twin XL 38 × 80
  • Full 54 × 75 · Queen 60 × 80
  • King 76 × 80 · California King 72 × 84

Room fit rules

Tape the bed footprint on the floor including the frame, then walk it. If you turn sideways to pass, the bed is too big for the room regardless of what the tape measure says on paper.

Bedding depth

Measure mattress height and add two inches for a protector. Standard sheets fit to about 12 inches; deeper hybrids need 15-to-18-inch pockets. This is the single most common post-purchase annoyance and it is entirely avoidable.
