How much should I spend on a guest room mattress?
What occasional-use bedrooms genuinely need — and what is a waste.
Key points
- • Medium firmness is the safest default for unknown sleepers
- • Approximately $1,000–$1,500 for a queen is usually right
- • Protection and airflow matter more than moving up a tier here
- • Low usage means 10–15 years is realistic
Why medium wins
You are furnishing for strangers. Side sleepers want soft, stomach sleepers want firm, and medium is the only setting that leaves neither group miserable for two nights.
Turnover habits
A guest bed that smells stale undoes a perfectly good mattress.
- • Strip the bed after every visit
- • Leave the door open and let the air handler reach the room
- • Baking soda refresh quarterly
- • Wash the protector between guests
Small touches guests notice
Two pillow lofts so they can choose, a spare blanket at the foot of the bed, and a bedside surface with a lamp and a reachable outlet. These cost very little and, for a two-night stay, do more for your guest's sleep than moving up a mattress tier would.
Common questions
Compare your options
Queen vs King
A king gives each partner 16 more inches of width than a queen splits between two. The deciding factor is usually the room, not the bed.

Price is not the same thing as value. This compares what an occasional-use mattress and a primary bedroom mattress actually give you — in materials, support and years of ownership.
