Rust on Furniture
Rust never stops on its own — every week you wait costs you metal.

Iron and steel oxidize in the presence of moisture and salt. In coastal Florida, both are constant.
Consistent, material-appropriate care is the single biggest factor in how long furniture and mattresses stay comfortable and beautiful. In Florida, humidity, salt air, and UV compound quickly — a small monthly routine prevents years of avoidable wear.
- Wrought iron patio sets
- Steel bed frames in garages
- Hardware and screws on outdoor pieces
- Color looks flat, patchy, or dusty even after a quick wipe
- New creaks, wobbles, or loose fasteners
- A faint musty smell after closed-up periods
- Fabric or leather feels stiff, tacky, or unusually dry
- Weekly fresh-water rinse within a mile of the coast
- Plastic glides so legs never sit in water
- Annual touch-up before storm season
- 1Vacuum or dust with a soft brush attachment to remove grit first.
- 2Spot-test any cleaner on a hidden area and wait 10 minutes.
- 3Work in small sections with a barely-damp microfiber, blotting outward.
- 4Rinse residue with a clean damp cloth, then dry with a fresh microfiber.
- 5Allow to fully air-dry away from direct sun before use.
Remove it down to clean metal
A wire brush or fine abrasive pad must reach bright metal. Painting over rust just hides it while it spreads underneath.
Primer is not optional
A rust-inhibiting primer is what actually stops the reaction. Topcoat alone fails within a season here.
Check the feet and hidden welds
Rust starts where water sits — inside leg tubes, under glides, and at unsealed weld seams.
- Dust and quick visual inspection
- Wipe high-contact surfaces with a dry microfiber
- Vacuum thoroughly including under and behind
- Check for loose hardware or joints
- Deep clean using material-appropriate cleaner
- Rotate cushions or accessories to even wear
- Professional deep clean or conditioning if applicable
- Full inspection, tighten fasteners, refresh protection
- Salt fog reaches several miles inland. Treat any exposed steel as coastal unless proven otherwise.
Well-cared-for pieces typically deliver 8–15 years of everyday performance. Investment-grade construction with a consistent routine routinely reaches 20+ years.
- Surface rust with sound metal underneath
- Flaking, pitted, or perforated frame members
When in doubt, get a second opinion before spending on repair — a 20-minute review often saves thousands.
