1
Overview

How to wash each fill type, and the fold test that tells you when a pillow is finished.

2
Why This Matters

Consistent, material-appropriate care is the single biggest factor in how long furniture and mattresses stay comfortable and beautiful. In Florida, humidity, salt air, and UV compound quickly — a small monthly routine prevents years of avoidable wear.

3
Common Problems
  • The fold test
  • Fill type decides the method
  • Replace every 1–2 years
  • Air out weekly
4
Warning Signs
  • Color looks flat, patchy, or dusty even after a quick wipe
  • New creaks, wobbles, or loose fasteners
  • A faint musty smell after closed-up periods
  • Fabric or leather feels stiff, tacky, or unusually dry
5
Prevention Strategies
  • Keep the room between 68–76 °F with humidity around 45–55%.
  • Rotate cushions, pillows, and accessories on a set weekly cadence.
  • Block direct afternoon sun with shades, sheers, or UV film.
  • Address spills and marks within the first 60 seconds — always blot, never rub.
6
Cleaning Instructions
  1. 1Vacuum or dust with a soft brush attachment to remove grit first.
  2. 2Spot-test any cleaner on a hidden area and wait 10 minutes.
  3. 3Work in small sections with a barely-damp microfiber, blotting outward.
  4. 4Rinse residue with a clean damp cloth, then dry with a fresh microfiber.
  5. 5Allow to fully air-dry away from direct sun before use.

The fold test

Fold the pillow in half and let go. If it does not spring back open, it is no longer supporting your neck and should be replaced.

Fill type decides the method

Down and polyester are usually machine washable in pairs on gentle. Memory foam and latex must never go in a washer — vacuum, spot clean, and air them out instead.

Replace every 1–2 years

Even a well-protected pillow accumulates moisture and skin cells. In Florida humidity, the shorter end of that range is realistic.

Air out weekly

Pulling pillows off the bed for an hour on a dry day releases the moisture that accumulates overnight and slows mite and mildew growth.

7
Maintenance Schedule
Weekly
  • Dust and quick visual inspection
  • Wipe high-contact surfaces with a dry microfiber
Monthly
  • Vacuum thoroughly including under and behind
  • Check for loose hardware or joints
Quarterly
  • Deep clean using material-appropriate cleaner
  • Rotate cushions or accessories to even wear
Annual
  • Professional deep clean or conditioning if applicable
  • Full inspection, tighten fasteners, refresh protection
8
Florida-Specific Considerations
  • Humidity spikes after storms — run dehumidifiers or A/C to hold indoor RH under 55%.
  • Salt air within a mile of the coast accelerates corrosion and finish wear; wipe metal and hardware weekly.
  • Snowbird and closed-up months are the highest-risk period; leave A/C on 78 °F and cover pieces exposed to direct light.

Florida humidity baseline

Keep indoor relative humidity in the 40–55% range year-round. Above 60% invites mildew, warping, and musty odors; below 30% dries wood and loosens joints. A smart thermostat with humidity control or a stand-alone dehumidifier makes this effortless.

9
Expected Lifespan

Well-cared-for pieces typically deliver 8–15 years of everyday performance. Investment-grade construction with a consistent routine routinely reaches 20+ years.

10
Repair vs Replace Guidance
Repair when…
  • Structural frame is sound and joints are tight
  • Finish or upholstery damage is localized (one cushion, one panel)
  • You still love the shape, scale, and function of the piece
Replace when…
  • Frame flex, broken joinery, or repeated hardware failure
  • Widespread finish, foam, or spring breakdown
  • The piece no longer fits your life stage, room, or comfort needs

When in doubt, get a second opinion before spending on repair — a 20-minute review often saves thousands.
