Hand-knotted wool on cotton foundation — cared for correctly, it outlives the house.
Consistent, material-appropriate care is the single biggest factor in how long furniture and mattresses stay comfortable and beautiful. In Florida, humidity, salt air, and UV compound quickly — a small monthly routine prevents years of avoidable wear.
- No beater bar, ever
- Fringe is structural
- Rotate 180° twice a year
- Professional washing every 3–5 years
- Color looks flat, patchy, or dusty even after a quick wipe
- New creaks, wobbles, or loose fasteners
- A faint musty smell after closed-up periods
- Fabric or leather feels stiff, tacky, or unusually dry
- Keep the room between 68–76 °F with humidity around 45–55%.
- Rotate cushions, pillows, and accessories on a set weekly cadence.
- Block direct afternoon sun with shades, sheers, or UV film.
- Address spills and marks within the first 60 seconds — always blot, never rub.
- 1Vacuum or dust with a soft brush attachment to remove grit first.
- 2Spot-test any cleaner on a hidden area and wait 10 minutes.
- 3Work in small sections with a barely-damp microfiber, blotting outward.
- 4Rinse residue with a clean damp cloth, then dry with a fresh microfiber.
- 5Allow to fully air-dry away from direct sun before use.
No beater bar, ever
A rotating brush tears knot heads and fringe. Use suction only, in the direction of the pile, and vacuum the back once a season.
Fringe is structural
The fringe is the warp of the rug, not a decoration. Never vacuum it aggressively and never machine wash it — have it secured professionally when it frays.
Rotate 180° twice a year
Even wear and even fading. In a Florida room with afternoon sun, make it quarterly.
Professional washing every 3–5 years
Full immersion washing by a rug specialist — not on-site steam cleaning — is what preserves value and removes the grit at the base of the pile.
- Dust and quick visual inspection
- Wipe high-contact surfaces with a dry microfiber
- Vacuum thoroughly including under and behind
- Check for loose hardware or joints
- Deep clean using material-appropriate cleaner
- Rotate cushions or accessories to even wear
- Professional deep clean or conditioning if applicable
- Full inspection, tighten fasteners, refresh protection
- Humidity spikes after storms — run dehumidifiers or A/C to hold indoor RH under 55%.
- Salt air within a mile of the coast accelerates corrosion and finish wear; wipe metal and hardware weekly.
- Snowbird and closed-up months are the highest-risk period; leave A/C on 78 °F and cover pieces exposed to direct light.
Well-cared-for pieces typically deliver 8–15 years of everyday performance. Investment-grade construction with a consistent routine routinely reaches 20+ years.
- Structural frame is sound and joints are tight
- Finish or upholstery damage is localized (one cushion, one panel)
- You still love the shape, scale, and function of the piece
- Frame flex, broken joinery, or repeated hardware failure
- Widespread finish, foam, or spring breakdown
- The piece no longer fits your life stage, room, or comfort needs
When in doubt, get a second opinion before spending on repair — a 20-minute review often saves thousands.
