Foam Density Compared

Density predicts durability better than any other published spec. It is the number most worth asking about and the one most often left off the tag.

The two options

Low to Mid Density

Memory foam under about 4 lb/ft³; polyfoam under about 1.8 lb/ft³.

Strengths

  • Lower price
  • Lighter and easier to move
  • Softer initial feel
  • Sleeps slightly cooler than very dense foam

Tradeoffs

  • Body impressions appear within a few years
  • Support degrades faster under heavier sleepers
  • Often paired with shorter warranties and larger sag exclusions

Best for

Guest rooms · Children's rooms · Short-term or transitional housing · Lighter sleepers

High Density

Memory foam at 4 to 5+ lb/ft³; polyfoam cores at 1.8 lb/ft³ or higher.

Strengths

  • Holds shape and support for the life of the mattress
  • Deeper contouring with better recovery
  • Backed by longer warranties with tighter sag thresholds

Tradeoffs

  • Heavier
  • More expensive
  • Can retain more heat
  • Longer break-in period

Best for

Primary bedrooms · Heavier body weights · Buyers keeping a mattress 8+ years

Honest tradeoffs

  • Density is about durability, not firmness — a dense foam can be soft and a low-density foam can be firm.
  • If a retailer cannot tell you the foam density, treat that as information in itself.

The verdict

For a bed you sleep on every night, insist on a high-density support core. Save low-density constructions for rooms used a few weeks a year.
