Firm vs Plush

Firmness is a comfort preference, not a support rating. A plush mattress can be perfectly supportive, and a firm one can leave your hips unsupported.

The two options

Firm

A flatter surface, typically 7 to 9 on the ten-point firmness scale.

Strengths

  • Keeps the hips lifted and the spine flat for back and stomach sleepers
  • Easier to move across and get out of
  • Comfort layers compress more slowly over time

Tradeoffs

  • Pressure builds at the shoulders and hips for side sleepers
  • Can feel harsh for lighter sleepers under 130 pounds

Best for

Stomach sleepers · Back sleepers · Heavier body weights · Sleepers with lower-back complaints from sinking

Plush

A cushioned surface, typically 3 to 5 on the ten-point scale.

Strengths

  • Lets the shoulder and hip settle so the spine stays straight on your side
  • Reduces pressure-point pain and nighttime tossing
  • Feels immediately comfortable to most sleepers

Tradeoffs

  • Stomach sleepers' hips sink, arching the lower back
  • Softens faster
  • Harder to reposition on

Best for

Side sleepers · Lighter body weights · Shoulder or hip pain · Sleepers who prefer being cradled

Honest tradeoffs

  • Body weight shifts perceived firmness by roughly a full point in each direction — the same mattress feels firmer to a lighter sleeper.
  • Couples with different preferences are usually better served by a medium base plus a topper on one side than by splitting the difference.

The verdict

Most adults land at medium to medium-firm, around 5.5 to 6.5. Start from your sleep position, then adjust for body weight and pressure-point history.
