Drawer Sticking
A drawer that sticks in summer and glides in winter is humidity, not damage.
This guide is intended for educational purposes only. Every home, product, and situation is different. Always follow manufacturer instructions and consult qualified professionals when appropriate.
Wood drawers expand with indoor humidity. Stabilizing the room is a better fix than removing material.
Consistent, material-appropriate care is the single biggest factor in how long furniture and mattresses stay comfortable and beautiful. In Florida, humidity, salt air, and UV compound quickly — a small monthly routine prevents years of avoidable wear.
- Seasonal humidity swelling
- Overloaded drawer boxes
- Loose runner screws
- Debris in the track
- Color looks flat, patchy, or dusty even after a quick wipe
- New creaks, wobbles, or loose fasteners
- A faint musty smell after closed-up periods
- Fabric or leather feels stiff, tacky, or unusually dry
- Hold indoor RH at 45–55%
- Wax runners annually
- Do not overload
- 1Vacuum or dust with a soft brush attachment to remove grit first.
- 2Spot-test any cleaner on a hidden area and wait 10 minutes.
- 3Work in small sections with a barely-damp microfiber, blotting outward.
- 4Rinse residue with a clean damp cloth, then dry with a fresh microfiber.
- 5Allow to fully air-dry away from direct sun before use.
Wax the runners, do not oil them
Paraffin, a candle stub, or paste wax on wood runners is the traditional fix and it works immediately. Oil attracts grit.
Empty the drawer and inspect
Overloading causes the box to rack and bind. Half the fix is often just removing weight.
Sand only as a last resort
Wood that swells in humidity will shrink again. Sand too much in August and the drawer rattles in January.
- Dust and quick visual inspection
- Wipe high-contact surfaces with a dry microfiber
- Vacuum thoroughly including under and behind
- Check for loose hardware or joints
- Deep clean using material-appropriate cleaner
- Rotate cushions or accessories to even wear
- Professional deep clean or conditioning if applicable
- Full inspection, tighten fasteners, refresh protection
- Summer RH spikes make this the most common Florida furniture complaint of the year — and the most fixable.
Well-cared-for pieces typically deliver 8–15 years of everyday performance. Investment-grade construction with a consistent routine routinely reaches 20+ years.
- Structural frame is sound and joints are tight
- Finish or upholstery damage is localized (one cushion, one panel)
- You still love the shape, scale, and function of the piece
- Frame flex, broken joinery, or repeated hardware failure
- Widespread finish, foam, or spring breakdown
- The piece no longer fits your life stage, room, or comfort needs
When in doubt, get a second opinion before spending on repair — a 20-minute review often saves thousands.
