Cushion Flattening
Flat cushions are usually foam fatigue, and new cores cost a fraction of a new sofa.
This guide is intended for educational purposes only. Every home, product, and situation is different. Always follow manufacturer instructions and consult qualified professionals when appropriate.
Foam loses loft with cycles, heat, and humidity. The cover and frame usually outlive the core by a decade.
Consistent, material-appropriate care is the single biggest factor in how long furniture and mattresses stay comfortable and beautiful. In Florida, humidity, salt air, and UV compound quickly — a small monthly routine prevents years of avoidable wear.
- Low-density builder-grade foam
- Sitting in one spot exclusively
- Down blends that were never re-fluffed
- Color looks flat, patchy, or dusty even after a quick wipe
- New creaks, wobbles, or loose fasteners
- A faint musty smell after closed-up periods
- Fabric or leather feels stiff, tacky, or unusually dry
- Weekly rotation
- Re-fluff down and feather blends after every use
- Keep humidity under 55%
- 1Vacuum or dust with a soft brush attachment to remove grit first.
- 2Spot-test any cleaner on a hidden area and wait 10 minutes.
- 3Work in small sections with a barely-damp microfiber, blotting outward.
- 4Rinse residue with a clean damp cloth, then dry with a fresh microfiber.
- 5Allow to fully air-dry away from direct sun before use.
Rotate and re-fluff weekly
Most 'flat' cushions are just compressed in one favorite seat. Weekly rotation prevents half of all flattening complaints.
Unzip and inspect the core
Foam that stays compressed after 24 hours off the sofa has lost its cell structure and needs replacing.
Ask for high-resiliency foam
A 1.8–2.5 lb density HR core with a Dacron wrap restores the original feel and typically lasts 8–10 years.
- Dust and quick visual inspection
- Wipe high-contact surfaces with a dry microfiber
- Vacuum thoroughly including under and behind
- Check for loose hardware or joints
- Deep clean using material-appropriate cleaner
- Rotate cushions or accessories to even wear
- Professional deep clean or conditioning if applicable
- Full inspection, tighten fasteners, refresh protection
- Humidity spikes after storms — run dehumidifiers or A/C to hold indoor RH under 55%.
- Salt air within a mile of the coast accelerates corrosion and finish wear; wipe metal and hardware weekly.
- Snowbird and closed-up months are the highest-risk period; leave A/C on 78 °F and cover pieces exposed to direct light.
Well-cared-for pieces typically deliver 8–15 years of everyday performance. Investment-grade construction with a consistent routine routinely reaches 20+ years.
- Frame solid, covers in good shape
- Frame flex or widespread cover wear
New cores typically run $80–$200 per seat.
