Rich, expensive, and the species most likely to fade rather than darken in Florida light.
Consistent, material-appropriate care is the single biggest factor in how long furniture and mattresses stay comfortable and beautiful. In Florida, humidity, salt air, and UV compound quickly — a small monthly routine prevents years of avoidable wear.
- Walnut lightens in sun
- Oiled walnut needs refreshing
- Keep it stable
- Never use ammonia or bleach
- Color looks flat, patchy, or dusty even after a quick wipe
- New creaks, wobbles, or loose fasteners
- A faint musty smell after closed-up periods
- Fabric or leather feels stiff, tacky, or unusually dry
- Keep the room between 68–76 °F with humidity around 45–55%.
- Rotate cushions, pillows, and accessories on a set weekly cadence.
- Block direct afternoon sun with shades, sheers, or UV film.
- Address spills and marks within the first 60 seconds — always blot, never rub.
- 1Vacuum or dust with a soft brush attachment to remove grit first.
- 2Spot-test any cleaner on a hidden area and wait 10 minutes.
- 3Work in small sections with a barely-damp microfiber, blotting outward.
- 4Rinse residue with a clean damp cloth, then dry with a fresh microfiber.
- 5Allow to fully air-dry away from direct sun before use.
Walnut lightens in sun
Unlike cherry, walnut loses depth and can go grayish-brown under UV. Direct afternoon light on a walnut top will visibly change it within a year.
Oiled walnut needs refreshing
Many walnut pieces are oil-finished to show the grain. Reapply when water no longer beads, and always wipe every trace off.
Keep it stable
Wide walnut slabs and live edges are highly sensitive to humidity swings; steady RH is the difference between a beautiful table and a cracked one.
Never use ammonia or bleach
Both strip the natural depth of color that makes walnut worth the price. pH-neutral cleaners only.
- Dust and quick visual inspection
- Wipe high-contact surfaces with a dry microfiber
- Vacuum thoroughly including under and behind
- Check for loose hardware or joints
- Deep clean using material-appropriate cleaner
- Rotate cushions or accessories to even wear
- Professional deep clean or conditioning if applicable
- Full inspection, tighten fasteners, refresh protection
- Humidity spikes after storms — run dehumidifiers or A/C to hold indoor RH under 55%.
- Salt air within a mile of the coast accelerates corrosion and finish wear; wipe metal and hardware weekly.
- Snowbird and closed-up months are the highest-risk period; leave A/C on 78 °F and cover pieces exposed to direct light.
UV and sun exposure
Florida sun fades fabric, dries leather, and shifts wood color within a season. Sheers, UV window film, and rotating layouts twice a year spread exposure evenly instead of fading one panel while the rest stays new.
Well-cared-for pieces typically deliver 8–15 years of everyday performance. Investment-grade construction with a consistent routine routinely reaches 20+ years.
- Structural frame is sound and joints are tight
- Finish or upholstery damage is localized (one cushion, one panel)
- You still love the shape, scale, and function of the piece
- Frame flex, broken joinery, or repeated hardware failure
- Widespread finish, foam, or spring breakdown
- The piece no longer fits your life stage, room, or comfort needs
When in doubt, get a second opinion before spending on repair — a 20-minute review often saves thousands.
