How tempering works
The glass is heated and rapidly cooled, putting the surface in compression. That makes it several times stronger than annealed glass and causes it to shatter into small pebbles rather than shards when it does fail.
Edges and corners are the weak point
Compression makes the face strong but leaves the edge sensitive. A sharp knock on a corner — a dropped remote, a vacuum wand, a moved chair — is the usual cause of a table that seems to break for no reason.
Spontaneous breakage is real but rare
Nickel sulfide inclusions can cause tempered glass to shatter with no impact, sometimes years after manufacture. It is uncommon, it is not caused by anything you did, and reputable makers replace the top.
Cleaning method
A microfiber cloth with glass cleaner or a 50/50 water-and-vinegar solution works; spray the cloth rather than the glass so liquid does not run into the frame or the mounting pads.
Thermal shock
Never place a hot pan directly on a glass top, and avoid ice-cold items on a sun-heated table. Rapid temperature differences across the surface are a genuine crack risk.
Florida considerations
Glass patio tops and wind do not mix — an unweighted glass table can lift and shatter in storm gusts. Store or secure glass-topped outdoor furniture ahead of named storms.

- Snowbird and closed-up months are the highest-risk period; leave A/C on 78 °F and cover pieces exposed to direct light.
